Fourth Grade Foil Masks

Fourth graders viewed a slide show about masks in history, cultures and uses today. Besides religious ceremonies, masks have been used in burial, theater, sports, carnivals, emergency and medical purposes, and for ART. The human face is so interesting to artists that masks take on many forms in the art world. Our masks were first sketched in notebooks. These were transferred to a 5x5' paper. The paper was taped to a same size piece of gold or copper foil. Laying this on a magazine to "cushion" the process, students drew over their designs, pressing firmly. This is called "embossing" and pushes the patterns out onto the other side of the foil. Next students used sharpies to color in their masks, leaving some of the initial foil showing. The chop

5th graders completed their Sumi-e paintings by engraving a design or initials onto styrofoam to create their personal "chop". In Sumi-e style, they used red paint and printed onto a corner of their artwork. Some turned out more clearly than others, which was okay with me. Sometimes it is the experiment and experience of "trying" something new, that creates the most fun in art.

Fourth Grade Self Portraits

Fourth grade is finishing their portraits. They had to creatively letter 8 adjectives and fun lines to show movement. The final step involved using metallic tempera paint to embellish their lines and letters. I call this giving the artwork "pizzaz!"

Kinders paint clay turtles

Our clay pinch pot turtles have been fired in the kiln. Kinders had fun using blues, greens and yellows to paint their bisque turtles.

Kinders Create Secondary Colors

One of my favorite Elementary art lessons is using paints to mix colors. It is like magic for our Kinders. We have read books about colors, sang songs about colors. Time to make more of those colors. The "oohs and ahhs" were ringing throughout my art room as I plopped 2 primary colors of tempera paints onto papers. Students stirred and mixed to paint 3 different papers. They mixed red and yellow to make orange, red and blue to make purple, and yellow and blue to make green. These were saved until the next week. Then we read and learned about insects. Kinders cut shapes out of their painted papers to begin their "bugs". Come back to see how we decorate those bugs to make each a one-of-a-kind insect.

Third grade tissues tiles

Third grade had fun creating texture ( something you can feel) with tissue paper, glue and a texture plate. They quickly glued on pieces of tissue. The next day, when dry, I popped the tiles off of the plates. The textures and colors are lovely. Come back to see what the students creatively choose to do with their tiles.
