Fifth grade glazed and embellished dragons

Today I got out all kinds of fun items; beads, buttons, glitter, tissue, feathers, lace, ribbon, googly eyes. Then I let students embellish their glazed dragons. The only rule was that whatever was added had to "enhance"  the beast, not overwhelm!
Ah the glitter!!!!!! (everywhere! Alas, an art room...😊) Then students graded themselves according to a rubric and explained why they believe they earned that grade. As usual, they were too self-critical and graded themselves lower than I did!

First Grade Bears

First grade is concluding a project on bears. They learned about types of bears. They drew bears, added patterns of lines and shapes for their scarf....Painted a crayon resist.. Watercolored wet on wet for the background with printed circles....Today the students added eyes and assemble their bears. Pretty cute fellows!

Fifth graders glaze bisque dragons

Fifth grade has loved this dragon project. The fired clay is now called bisque, and ready for glaze. Next week they will embellish their creatures with various items from the art room.

Third Grade Worry Dolls

Third Graders heard a few stories about the worry dolls of Guatemala.  These traditional stick dolls are a way for children to sleep at night without  stressing over worries.  They tell their worries to the figure, and place it under their pillow. Our  students wrote about what worried them. They drew ideas and saw actual worry dolls that I had. Then they created their own out of a wooden bead, chenille stems, yarn, and felt.  Here a few examples. They children loved this sick craft, and made very unique dolls. Some chose animals, some a person, one student  even made a green alien.

Fourth Grade warm/cool/abstract art

Fourth graders viewed a lot of slides about how artists use warm colors ( yellow, orange, red) and cool colors (blue, purple, green) in their artworks. The learned about pop art, and abstract art of the 1960's that made designs. They are drawing a spiral line and shape abstract design. Starting with the warm colors students are painting now. I added black and white to mix into their colors to create tints and shades as well.
Here are a few starters. They could choose the background or spirals for their warm colors.

First Grade Bears

Some First grade classes are learning about and creating bears. Today we painted a background for our bear heads. We used the wet on wet technique. Water is applied to a small area and wet paint swished in. A few salt crystals in the wet add a sparkly pattern!

First Grade Elephants

Some first grade classes are creating elephants. Today we cut and glued heads!

Astronauts at School!

Today Third grade started their astronauts. A few finished. Here is a sampling of completed works of art.
